Bronze Award

Welcome to the Idsall Bronze Duke of Edinburgh web page. Below you will find information on the award sections, the sign up and registration procedure and key dates for the forthcoming award.

The Bronze award starts with an assembly during the first term during year 9, where pupils will be given a basic outline to what the award involves. Pupils should then go away and research the award to see if they would like to continue.

Pupils should be aware that 2 weekends and the use of activity days in July will be required by all Bronze candidates as well as attending regular session 6 sessions from January until July (please see dates below for further details).

If pupils decide to continue onto the award then an application form can be collected from Idsall's DofE Manager (please note we can run between 1 and 3 groups depending upon numbers and staffing.  Unsuccessful students can contact Mr Dave Thorley at Shirehall for more information about completing the award through other providers.

Once the applications have been received; a parental meeting is scheduled for sometime in December and county registration forms along with medical forms are given out and the session 6 training will begin shortly after.

The cost for the award is £65 this cost covers registration, the welcome pack for the Electronic D of E online logbook, petrol and transport costs, equipment use inc gas for trangia cookers and campsite fees.


The award is divided into 4 sections; Expedition, Volunteering, skill and Physical.

The expedition section; which requires the session 6 training is led by Mr Hall. This training includes navigation, countryside code, rucksack packing, food and cooking, campcraft, first aid and route planning and tent pitching etc. This training is compulsory and pupils who miss sessions will not be allowed to continue with the award for safety reasons.

The Physical section and Skill section can be from a range of areas (please see the D of E website) and 1 of these sections must be performed for at least 6 months with the other for 3 months continuously.

The Volunteering or service section again can be from a variety of areas, we do have links with local charity shops and establishments but candidates are encouraged to source their own. Often pupils help with animals or younger children in a variety of ways. We have also had fundraising with pupils collecting money and raising money for a variety of local charities. This section has to be completed for 3 months.

Pupils are monitored and led by male and female staff members who camp on the same campsite during overnight expeditions. Staff are very experienced and always have a first aid trained member of staff on expedition. All expeditions have a leader who is expedition or mountain trained to either BELA, WGL, D of E Supervisor, D of E Assessor or Mountain leader Summer and Mountain leader Winter qualification.
